A new temple just outside 13th century Ek Phanom

Were finishing our latest Cambodian fam trip, planning an upcoming group food tour here again next year — about time, as we haven’t toured here for a few years (despite our regular visits.)  Today flying off to Bangkok to pick up advance copies of The Burma Cookbook (River Books, London), then straight to Good Food & Wine Show where we are exhibiting in Brisbane, Australia this weekend.

The boys at Globetrotting Gourmet have a full dance card, hosting upcoming tours to Hanoi over the holidays, Burma/Myanmar in April ’14 over the Water Festival, and the upcoming launch of their new book, The Burma Cookbook, published by River Books. They’ll soon be touring on a two-month promo blitz across over the new year, but the best news is that there are seats still available on all their upcoming food tours.

And if any Australian cooking school or travel group wants them to address clients in January or February, contact them before they leave for the US.  They host the tastiest cooking demonstrations!

Join writer and food stylist Robert Carmack, and textile guru partner Morrison Polkinghorne as they tour northern Vietnam for New Year’s eve celebrations, Dec 29-Jan 5, with optional Ha Long Bay pre and post excursions.  Savour the country’s best foods while meeting its top chefs, including celebrity Didier Corlou or Verticale and Madame Thien and cookbook author Tracy Lister.

Feast with celebrity chef Didier Corlou, cruise the Red River Delta, and visit exquisite artisanal craft villages of Northern Vietnam. Meet local authors, ambassadors sharing Vietnam’s great cuisine around the world. Includes our Pho noodle soup “crawl” on pedicabs through the laneways of the capital’s medieval Old Quarter.  You’ll never again eat so much Pho in one go — but then, that’s the only way to discern the difference between great and The Best! Our group billets at mod chic luxe hotel l’Opera in the city center, with views of the classical French opera house.

Cookbook author Robert Carmack and textile authority Morrison Polkinghorne broaden their range of culinary activities, offering an “Authors’ Lunches” program – a chance to learn from the experts, while eating some of the best and most authentic foods in northern Vietnam.  The settings are informal around the table, more like a lunch than a lecture, small and intimate. And truly genuine local encounters.

The boys at Globetrotting Gourmet note a trend emerging in food travel. Rather than just learning a series of recipes, participants seek grounded knowledge of ingredients, taste combinations and technique, to explore Asian cooking through tastings, market tours and by talking to the local experts. “People want the genuine experience, something they can’t achieve on their own.  So they come to us,” explains director Robert Carmack. “These are not cooking class tours, they are truly food and culture tours — and better yet, we include all the cultural highlights as well. And we ensure you are eating deliciously throughout.”

What a delicious way to start your new year.  Dates: Dec 29-Jan 5, with optional Ha Long Bay cruises pre- and post tour. Priced from $3850, with deluxe accommodation.

Globetrotting Gourmet food tours, now in its second decade, offers just a few trips a year– and each one is unique, taking food lovers well off the beaten track, to a world of Asian authenticity. Each program is personally organised and hosted by Robert and Morrison.  “If we simply farmed the tour off to a local company, they would presume wrongly what our clientele wants.  They want authenticity, uniqueness, and a chance to break baguettes with the locals. So we organise the sites and restaurants ourselves,” explains co-host Morrison.  It’s a lot more work that way for us, but much more fulfilling.  And it definitely works, as we have so many repeat customers.”

Dates are Sunday 29 Dec until 5 Jan ’14, with an optional Ha Long Bay cruise pre or post tour. This tour only covers northern Vietnam, ridding guests of timely delays traveling between airports, but further journeys south can easily be arranged through their recommended local Hanoi tour company.
