We’d been hearing great things about Shwe Sa Bwe chef training school in Rangoon/Yangon. Founded by Francois Stoupan after stints with Red Cross in Congo and Georgia, he and wife sold their Paris digs to set up this converted 50s villa in the city’s northern suburbs.
This spot is a delight, with outdoor seating during the dry season, and indoors during Monsoons. Nine months of training later, apprentices are set out on their own — but only after a commitment to stay in Myanmar/Burma to support the local economy. Michelin 3-star Michel Bras and son Olivier have been instrumental, sending staff to instruct students. And so far, the menu is strictly French — but with oh so much pedigree. We ate here twice in Dec and Jan, first on our own, and second with our latest tour group.
